Let’s say I own a painting by one of the world’s great artists, which is normally worth thousands of dollars. I take it up to the Arctic, and using some smooth-talking “salesmanship” I persuade an Eskimo to give me a bunch of animal furs worth 500 dollars for the painting. In reality, I may have hurt him. After all, he has no use for the painting. It has no functional value to him;it won’t add to his life.

But suppose I give the Eskimo a gun worth 50 dollars for his animal furs. Now he has made a good deal. The gun is useful to him. It will help him get many more furs, as well as food. It will add to his life in all kinds of ways. In short, it will make him rich.
